Charles Lachaux\u2019s approach to winemaking is as far as it gets from anything conservative or risk-averse. For him, playing it safe is the worst-case scenario. In a region like Burgundy, where ever-rising prices push many producers to avoid risks and follow predictable paths, Lachaux deliberately chooses to walk the edge. He believes that making a good wine without making mistakes is too easy, but also too sterile. For him, experimentation is the only way forward.<\/p>\n
But who is Charles Lachaux?<\/p>\n
The son of Florence Arnoux-Lachaux and grandson of Robert Arnoux, Charles represents the sixth generation of a family deeply rooted in Vosne-Roman\u00e9e. The domaine was founded in 1858 under the name Domaine Robert Arnoux, and in 2007 it took on its current name: Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux.<\/p>\n
After completing his studies, Charles began his practical training in one of Burgundy\u2019s most prestigious estates: Domaine Armand Rousseau, where he worked under the guidance of Eric Rousseau. The knowledge he gained there was later enriched by international experience, which helped him develop a radical and personal vision for both vineyard and cellar work.<\/p>\n
In 2012, he returned to the family estate, taking over winemaking and vineyard management. His philosophy is rooted in biodynamics, but the true revolution begins in the vineyard. Charles rejects mechanized farming and embraces a fully manual approach, one that respects the natural timing of the plant. Grass grows freely between the rows, and pruning follows a method he developed himself, known as \u201cThe Arnoux-Lachaux Gobelet.\u201d It is a variation of the Guyot-Poussard system that raises the trellising well beyond the usual 100-110 cm, reaching up to 160 cm. This promotes greater photosynthetic activity and a more harmonious balance between vine growth and grape production.<\/p>\n
In the cellar, the philosophy is just as clear: 100 percent whole-cluster vinification for every wine. No unnecessary manipulation. Every action is reduced to the minimum in order not to interfere with the natural expression of the fruit.<\/p>\n
Another key moment came in 2018, when the domaine\u2019s label was completely redesigned by his wife, Louise. She took inspiration from the family\u2019s old historical labels. Charles saw this change as a way to visually communicate the deep transformation underway and make the new spirit of the domaine tangible.<\/p>\n
Charles also draws inspiration from an unexpected source: Japanese cuisine. Just as in the finest traditions of Japanese gastronomy, where the excellence of raw ingredients demands minimal intervention, in wine grapes should be so perfect that the winemaker\u2019s role becomes almost invisible.<\/p>\n
In line with this philosophy, in 2020 he introduced a new experiment: the use of custom-made ceramic tanks, the only ones of their kind in Burgundy. Unlike oak barrels, ceramic imparts no flavor to the wine and does not alter the character of the vintage. At the same time, it allows for a consistent exchange of air without drying out the contents, making it possible to age the wine for up to 30 months.<\/p>\n
The result is wines of rare precision, depth and longevity.
