Located in Fl\u00f6rsheim-Dalsheim, in the heart of the Rhineland-Palatinate, Weingut Keller is one of Germany\u2019s most renowned and respected wineries.<\/p>\n
Its origins date back to 1789, when Johann Leonhard Keller, originally from Zurich, settled in the region to dedicate himself to viticulture. Today, the estate is led by Klaus-Peter Keller, the ninth generation of the family, together with his wife Julia and their son Felix and his partner Bella.<\/p>\n
The estate covers about 20 hectares of vineyards, of which 18 are classified as Grand Cru, and 2.5 hectares are dedicated to sparkling wine production. The vineyards are spread over two main soil types: the limestone-rich hills (H\u00fcgelland) around Dalsheim and Westhofen, and the red slate of the Rote Hang near Nierstein, where the estate has been active since 2009. Riesling represents 80% of production and is the heart of the estate\u2019s identity, but Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sylvaner, Scheurebe, and Rieslaner are also cultivated.<\/p>\n
After studying oenology in Geisenheim and gaining experience in Burgundy at Armand Rousseau and Hubert Lignier, Klaus-Peter Keller returned to the family estate in the late 1990s. Together with his wife Julia, he launched the first dry Riesling Grosses Gew\u00e4chs (GG) in 2001 and the legendary G-Max, now considered the most expensive dry Riesling in the world. Since then, the Keller name has become synonymous with uncompromising quality, not only in dry wines but also in botrytized sweet wines and exceptionally elegant Pinot Noirs.<\/p>\n
Felix\u2019s arrival in 2018 marked a new chapter of innovation. Drawing on experience gained at Ber\u00e8che in Champagne and with former Bollinger cellar master Mathieu Kaufmann, he brought renewed focus to Chardonnay and sparkling wines. He works closely with his partner Bella, currently pursuing the Master of Wine title, and together they play an active role in the estate\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
Weingut Keller\u2019s production philosophy is based on precise, terroir-driven viticulture. Only the best parcels (often with vines over 25 years old) are used for flagship wines. All vineyard work is done by hand: pruning, canopy management, and training of the shoots. The estate produces its own compost to increase water retention and organic matter in the soil. Yields are deliberately low and grape selection is strict to ensure maximum quality.<\/p>\n
In the cellar, vinification follows a minimalist approach. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and depending on the wine, aging takes place in large oak barrels or stainless steel tanks. The result is a collection of elegant, complex, and long-lived wines that best express the character of the terroir. The house style aims for \u201cpower without weight,\u201d with alcohol levels rarely exceeding 13%.<\/p>\n
Climate change has increased the potential of the H\u00fcgelland hills, now ideal for slow and complete Riesling ripening through October. In the warmer Rote Hang of Nierstein, advanced canopy management techniques are used to delay ripening and preserve aromatic freshness.<\/p>\n
Among the estate\u2019s signature wines, the legendary G-Max sits at the top (the origin of its vineyard remains a well-kept secret). Other highlights include several Riesling Grosses Gew\u00e4chs from old vines in Dalsheim, Westhofen, Zellertal, and Nierstein, as well as Von der Fels, a dry Riesling made from young vines in high- quality sites. The estate also produces high-quality Pinot Noir and noble sweet wines of extraordinary depth and refinement.<\/p>\n
Family heritage remains central to the estate\u2019s success: Hedwig Keller, Klaus- Peter\u2019s mother, was instrumental in selecting clonal material from old Saar vineyards, while his father Klaus was named Winemaker of the Year by Gault Millau in 2000. Julia Keller contributes a creative vision especially for lesser- known varieties like Scheurebe and Rieslaner. The Burgundian influence is also evident in the program dedicated to Pinot Noir.<\/p>\n
