Jean-Claude Ramonet: the legendary legacy of a family that shaped the history of Burgundy whites

The winery began in the 1920s with the eccentric figure of Pierre Ramonet. The estate then passed to his son André, and finally to the grandsons Jean-Claude and Noël.

Pierre was born into a family of millers from Bresse, a village south of Burgundy, who moved to Beaune. When the mill went bankrupt, his father Claude started working as a vine-grower. At the age of eight, Pierre left school to help his father in the vineyard, and a few years later Claude bought his first vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet.

Over the years, the estate continued to grow until it reached its current 17 hectares of property. Among the vineyards, four of the five Montrachet Grand Crus stand out for their importance: Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet.

Since the 2014 harvest, Noël handed over management to his brother Jean- Claude, who, with the help of his daughters Anne-France and Clarisse, runs the domaine with the same care and dedication as their grandfather. The guiding principle is to increase the age of the vines while lowering yields.

Many experts agree that Ramonet wines are all individualists, stating that they are Ramonet wines first, before being Chassagne or Bâtard. The house tends to produce wines “the old-fashioned way,” leaving fleeting wine trends to other producers.

Complex and extremely refined, these wines are among the greatest white Burgundies produced today.
