Domaine Georges Noëllat: The New Energy of Vosne-Romanée Led by Maxime Cheurlin

Maxime Cheurlin, owner and winemaker of Domaine Georges Noëllat, embodies the continuity of one of Vosne-Romanée’s most historic families, whose winemaking roots date back to before the French Revolution. For generations, the Noëllat family has cultivated and produced wine in this esteemed region, with the current Domaine taking shape in 1955 when Georges Noëllat, Maxime’s great-grandfather, consolidated the estate.

In 1988, Georges’s daughter Marie Thérèse took over management alongside her husband Jacques Cheurlin, a grower originally from Champagne. However, the true turning point came in 2010 when Maxime, just eighteen years old, moved to Burgundy to inherit the family legacy and bring new vitality to the Domaine.

At that time, Domaine Georges Noëllat covered 4.5 hectares spread across prestigious crus in Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echézeaux, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Some vines planted by Maxime’s grandfather, Ernest Noëllat, are now between 70 and 110 years old, giving the wines exceptional depth and complexity.

With remarkable determination, Maxime revolutionized the Domaine in less than a decade. He stopped selling grapes to négociants, focusing exclusively on estate production and introducing innovative agronomic practices, such as a new pruning system and soil cultivation with horses. He also expanded the vineyard area to the current 11 hectares.

In the cellar, the approach is meticulous and essential. Hand-harvested grapes undergo spontaneous fermentations following cold maceration. Aging takes place in new barriques without filtration or fining, preserving the purity and elegance of the fruit.

Thanks to his bold vision and respect for the terroir, Maxime Cheurlin has positioned Domaine Georges Noëllat among the most exciting and sought-after estates in Vosne-Romanée, demonstrating how innovation and tradition can harmoniously coexist.
